The position provides technical leadership in research, varietal evaluation, seed multiplication, technology dissemination, and sustainable production of cassava, yam, sweet potato, taro, and cocoyam. The role coordinates with extension services, CARI, SDCA, development partners, and private sector stakeholders. It maintains production databases, supports monitoring and evaluation, and prepares technical reports to inform evidence- based planning and decision-making. KEY RESULT AREAS • Production and productivity of priority root and tuber crops • Availability and distribution of quality planting materials • Adoption of improved root and tuber crop production technologies • Commercialization and value addition of root and tuber crops • Information Management, Monitoring, and Reporting MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES a. GENERAL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES: • Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of root and tuber crop development programs and projects within the assigned region. • Coordinate root and tuber crop interventions with County Agriculture Coordinators, extension personnel, CARI, SDCA, development partners, and private sector actors. • Prepare and submit timely technical reports, work plans, progress updates, and recommendations in accordance with Ministry of Agriculture reporting requirements. • Maintain accurate records and databases on root and tuber crop production, farmer groups, improved varieties, planting materials, field demonstrations, and related interventions. • Support monitoring and evaluation of root and tuber crop projects and ensure compliance with approved technical guidelines and standards. • Provide technical inputs into agricultural policies, strategies, investment programs, and initiatives related to root and tuber crop development. 2 b. CORE TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITIES: • Formulate and submit root and tuber crop research proposals to stakeholders. • Conduct research and develop improved production technologies for cassava, yam, sweet potato, taro, and cocoyam. • Carry out varietal trials, seed multiplication, and distribution programs in collaboration with partners. • Provide technical expertise in the development of root and tuber crop management tools, manuals, and guidelines. • Host training sessions for extension agents, seed producers, farmers, and farmer organizations. • Provide technical backstopping in root and tuber crop production and management at CARI. • Conduct yield forecasting and participate in risk management assessments related to root and tuber crop production. • Participate in technical discussions and activities related to the design of Ministry of Agriculture programs and projects in root and tuber crop production. • Conduct field assessments of root and tuber crop performance and sustainability. • Promote climate-smart and environmentally sustainable practices in root and tuber crop production.
